Contact lens dehydration

Dehydration is generally acknowledged as insufficient water content in a particular substance or material.

Proper lens hydration is extremely important to maintain proper eye function and health.

Dehydration causes a gradual loss of the functional properties of the lens, and it becomes unpleasant to wear due to its reduced elasticity and brittle feeling. As the lens loses hydration, it also loses oxygen permeability. If total dryness occurs, lenses can not be regenerated by contact lens solution and thus can not be reused. Dehydration can cause high temperatures, irregular blinking, blurry vision and ocular fatigue.
